Homemade Sugar Cookies

HOMEMADE SUGAR COOKIES

I used the recipe that came with the cookie stamp, but a molasses or ginger cookie recipe would work as well.

Ingredients

  • 10 ounces flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 5 ounces sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 9 ounces butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Sugar for sprinkling on top of cookies

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, sugar and salt.
  3. Mix in butter and blend in until mixture is crumbly.
  4. Sir in egg yolk and vanilla.
  5. Chill dough for one hour.
  6. Sprinkle work surface and stamp with flour.
  7. Separate dough into golf ball-sized chunks.
  8. Flatten the balls and stamp.
  9. Sprinkle with sugar.
  10. Place on a silpat-covered baking sheet and bake for 6-8 minutes.

  1. MY COOKIES FELL FLAT AND LOST THEIR SHAPE. THEY BLENDED TOGETHER. DO YOU KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENED.

Could it be that the butter you used was not cold enough? Butter is what keeps a sugar cookie firm. It’s like what happens when you make chocolate chip cookies and you used melted butter instead of cold butter – they spread into each other and are very flat. The good news is that it doesn’t affect the flavor, but I know it can be disappointing when a recipe doesn’t come out just as you planned. I hope you’ll give it another try.
      Merry Christmas!
