Salty Dog, Greyhound and Salty Chihuahua Cocktails

Salty Dog, Greyhound and Salty Chihuahua Cocktails

No week that revolves around dogs would be complete without a celebratory cocktail to toast our dear and loyal companions.  Here’s a classic that will appeal to grapefruit lovers: a Salty Dog is made with grapefruit juice and vodka or gin.  If you add salt to the rim, it’s a Salty Dog; if you leave off the salt, it’s a Greyhound.  And if you substitute tequila for the vodka or gin, you’ve got yourself a Salty Chihuahua.  I encourage the lovers of other dog breeds to make up their own cocktails – it could be fun! How about Irish whiskey for Irish setters, or a mellow scotch for a Scottish terrier?  If you have other ideas for dog-themed cocktails, please send them along!

Grapefruit juice is strong and refreshing, like a quick dip in chilly ocean waves, but the alcohol soothes – it’s the warm towel after an invigorating swim.  This is a great brunch drink; maybe the hair of the dog for the night before?  Sorry about that, but it’s just so doggone hard to resist a dog pun.  Enjoy!
