Remember the Troops

One of our America’s Table staff has a husband stationed in Iraq this Christmas, so we’d like to take this opportunity to remind you that we can’t all be home for the holidays. One way to let our military personnel abroad know that we’re thinking of them is to send a package of goodies by December 15th.  This shoutout is for the Army First Infantry Division.

Need ideas for what to send? Specifics vary, depending on where they are deployed, but in Iraq, here’s a list of what’s useful:

  • Baby wipes
  • Disposable razors
  • Shaving cream
  • Shower gels
  • Multivitamins
  • Semi to non-perishable foods

If you’d like to send a package, please address it to:

And here’s a recipe for the chewy flourless chocolate cookies we put in our package, with special thanks to Pam Comstock at Mountain Sky Guest Ranch in Emigrant, Montana for this spectacular recipe! You’ll want to make a double or triple recipe and save a few for yourself!

Chewy Flourless Chocolate Cookies

Prep time: 35 minutes

Serves: makes 15 cookies

  • 1 ¾ cup powdered sugar
  • ½ Dutch cocoa
  • 1 teaspoons cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 egg whites
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts

  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees
  2. Mix together sugar, cocoa, cornstarch and salt. Gradually add egg whites, stirring with a spoon until the mixture forms a dough. Add nuts. If mixture is not thick enough to form balls, add more powdered sugar and cocoa.
  3. Form dough into balls, place on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes at 300 degrees until glossy and crackled.REMEMBER THE TROOPS on

For weeks, Ukraine’s leaders have urged calm despite dire warnings from the United States and its allies that an invasion was imminent. But in the wake of Putin’s move, some were preparing for the worst. Still, residents in the capital went about their usual business Tuesday. Women sold tulips on the side of the road in the city’s center, while metro trains were packed at the start of a workday as the city enjoyed warm wintry weather. On his way to work Tuesday, Deleaver Sefershaev, a videographer from Russian-annexed Crimea who now lives in Kyiv, told NBC News that Russia’s recognition of the breakaway regions may reduce Moscow’s leverage and make war more likely. But he said he was not afraid. “I’m going to work, I’ll do my job, I’ll live calmly further,” Sefershaev, 28, said. “The key here is to remain calm and not panic,” he added. Putin’s actions late Monday came after days of escalation in the crisis. The Russian decrees acknowledging the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk framed the troops as “peacekeepers,” which U.S.|Two houseboats docked at Lake Union in Seattle, Wash. See more pictures of home design. The weather forecast predicted a comfortably warm day, so you decide to wake up early and enjoy as much of the weekend as possible. With a yawn and a stretch, you rise up around seven and begin your daily activities. After you take a refreshing shower, brush your teeth and complete your morning exercises, a pot of coffee and a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon are just enough to invigorate you. Stepping outside into the fresh air, you exit your home onto the starboard side, walk forward and admire from the bow the rising sun — you are, of course, emerging from your very own houseboat. Entire societies typically crowd along major rivers, which provide easy access to travel and trade. And there is no doubt that most people love the sea — just visit a beach during the spring and summer seasons and you’ll see our deep connection to the water.
